How do QR codes work?
Those black-and-white squares aren’t random. Here’s how a QR code actually stores information and how your phone turns it back into a link in a split second.
A QR code is a 2D barcode
A traditional barcode stores data in one direction (the width of its lines). A QR code — “Quick Response” — stores data in two directions, across a grid of black and white squares called modules. That’s why it holds far more: a URL, contact card, or hundreds of characters of text.
What the parts do
- Finder patterns — the three big squares in the corners tell a scanner where the code is and its orientation, so it reads correctly at any angle.
- Alignment & timing patterns — smaller markers that help the scanner correct for distortion when the code is on a curved or tilted surface.
- Data modules — the rest of the grid, where your actual information is encoded as binary (each module is a 1 or 0).
- Quiet zone — the empty margin around the code that lets the scanner separate it from surrounding graphics.
How your phone reads it
Your camera captures the image, locates the finder patterns, maps the grid, reads each module as light or dark, then decodes that binary back into text using the QR standard. Modern phones do this natively — no app needed. You can try it with our free QR scanner.
Why a scratched code still works
QR codes include error correction using Reed–Solomon maths. Redundant data is baked in, so even if part of the code is dirty, scratched or covered by a logo, the scanner can reconstruct the missing bits. At the highest level, about 30% of the code can be damaged and it still reads — which is exactly why you can put a logo in the middle.

How much data can a QR code hold?
A lot — up to around 4,000 alphanumeric characters or 7,000 digits in the largest version. In practice, shorter data makes a simpler, more reliable code.
Do QR codes need the internet to be read?
No. Decoding happens on your device. You only need internet if the decoded content is a link you then open.
